Why am I passionate about this?

I have been writing for the past 21 years on mystical themes with a good dose of Mother Earth Love tossed in. Fifteen years ago, I launched the spoken word website, offering one ten-minute recorded essay monthly on mystical/philosophical themes. Having published three nonfiction books, I decided to take my love of nature and interest in mysticism and write a novel for young philosophers and Earth-loving elders. My book follows the mystical journey of a rather practical eleven-year-old to an enchanted lake in the high Alps. It contains gentle animals, wise trees, kindred spirits, and healing waters.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of The Secret Garden

Margaret Dulaney Why did I love this book?

This is perhaps the best-known and most obvious choice illustrating Nature’s healing powers. Mary, an orphaned girl, moves in with an estranged, reclusive uncle on his isolated English estate. Lonely and bereaved, Mary spends her days exploring both the house and extensive gardens, when one day she discovers a secret garden, locked away behind a wall.

This garden, tucked away and neglected for many years, is the key to Mary’s healing. Through quiet deliberation, she begins to bring the garden back to life and, in turn, finds new life in herself. The healing of the uncle is perhaps the most mystical scene in the book for me, brought about by a quiet moment beside a trickling stream, where he has an epiphany of heart healing. I find the book’s mixture of nature and mystery beguiling.

By Frances Hodgson Burnett, Tasha Tudor (illustrator),

What is this book about?

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett is a magical novel for adults and children alike

'I've stolen a garden,' she said very fast. 'It isn't mine. It isn't anybody's. Nobody wants it, nobody cares for it, nobody ever goes into it. Perhaps everything is dead in it already; I don't know.'

After losing her parents, young Mary Lennox is sent from India to live in her uncle's gloomy mansion on the wild English moors. She is lonely and has no one to play with, but one day she learns of a secret garden somewhere in the grounds that no…

Book cover of Anne of Green Gables

Margaret Dulaney Why did I love this book?

What I love most about this series (eight books in total) is that it is filled with utterly beautiful descriptions of the natural world. The stories take place on Prince Edward Island off of Nova Scotia and tell the tale of an orphaned girl named Anne Shirley, a lover of mother nature if there ever was one.

I saved this series to read until I was in my fifties, and I am very glad that I waited until I was mature enough to appreciate this extraordinary writer. Montgomery’s exuberant love of all of nature: ocean, fields, trees–she names the trees around her home–animals, changing seasons, is infectious. I have named the trees in my yard since reading the books. There are some writers who can share with you their passion. I was swept away by Montgomery’s Mother-Earth love.

George MacDonald’s mystical adoration of nature shines through all his writings. His books take place in Nineteenth-Century Scotland and England, in an obviously much quieter age. His insights into the living chorus of the natural world transcend any I have ever read.

His characters walk everywhere and absorb the natural world as if through a loving relationship with another soul. I consider George MacDonald my teacher, as did C.S. Lewis. This was written for children, or the childlike in all of us. I read it every year and have dedicated my book, Whippoorwill Willingly to MacDonald.

Book cover of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Margaret Dulaney Why did I love this book?

This book, the fifth book in C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series, takes us on a voyage on the ship, Dawn Treader, to the end of the world (which is not an end at all but a new beginning for one of the characters in the tale). The descriptions, especially those of the ocean near the edge of the world, had an effect on me that I would call quietly ecstatic.

Lewis is such a careful, clear, and spare writer that the words act on the heartstrings without notice. I thought while reading this book, “Oh, I have just been to the most beautiful place; I will never be the same.”

Book cover of My Side of the Mountain

Margaret Dulaney Why did I love this book?

This book is the story of a boy who runs away from his chaotic but loving home in New York City to try his hand at living in the wilderness of upstate New York.

I found it totally charming and instructive. He hollows out a tree to make himself a comfortable place to observe and embrace the Winter on the side of a mountain. This book is written more for child philosophers than Earth-Loving elders, but I read it to my husband, and we both enjoyed it greatly.

It is a different take on mother nature love than the others I have recommended, yet it still shines.

New book alert!

Why am I passionate about this?

About myself: As a novelist I’m crazy for detail. I believe it’s the odd and unexpected aspects of life that bring both characters and story worlds to life. This means that I try to be an observer at all times, keeping alert and using all five – and maybe six – senses. My perfect writing morning begins with a dog walk in the woods or on a beach, say, while keeping my senses sharp to the world around me and listening out for the first whisper of what the day’s writing will bring.

Lesley's book list on relationships and sexuality in post-World War II Britain

What is my book about?

This book is a literary historical novel. It is set in Britain immediately after World War II, when people – gay, straight, young, and old - are struggling to get back on track with their lives, including their love lives. Because of the turmoil of the times, the number of losses, and the dangerous and peculiar circumstances people find themselves in, sexual mores have become shaken and stirred.

But what happened after the war, in the time of healing and settling down? This novel examines the emotional, romantic, and sexual lives of three characters searching for a way to proceed.
